Gym Weights for Every Workout

The right gym weights depend on what you’re training for. Here’s how the main categories of weight training equipment earn their place in a program.

01 / STRENGTH

Heavy Barbell Work

Squats, deadlifts, presses and rows load the body more than almost anything else. A 2-inch Olympic bar with 45 lb plates lets you add weight in controlled increments as you get stronger, which is the whole point of progressive overload.

02 / MUSCLE

Dumbbell Hypertrophy

Dumbbells move independently, so each side works on its own and evens out strength differences. Moderate loads for higher reps — presses, curls, flyes, lunges — are where most muscle-building volume comes from.

03 / CONDITIONING

Kettlebell Circuits

Swings, cleans and carries keep your heart rate high while still loading the posterior chain. One or two kettlebells cover a full conditioning session in a small footprint.

04 / HOME

Home Gym Weights

Limited on space? Adjustable weights replace a whole dumbbell rack, and a bench plus a plate set covers pressing, rowing and accessory work in a spare room or garage.

Free weights

Free Weights for Sale

Free weights are any load that isn’t fixed to a machine — dumbbells, barbells, weight plates and kettlebells. They’re the backbone of almost every strength program because they ask your body to stabilise the load, not just move it.

Our free weights for sale span the sizes people actually train with. Single dumbbells from 5 lb upward for accessory work and rehab. Pairs in the 20–50 lb range for pressing and rowing. Weight plates in 5 lb, 10 lb, 25 lb and 45 lb so you can load a bar in sensible jumps. Kettlebells for swings and carries.

If you’re buying weights for sale as a first set, start with a barbell, a pair of adjustable dumbbells and enough plates to cover your working sets with room to add more later. Plates are easy to top up; bars and benches are worth buying once.

How to use them

Workout Gym Weights

Choosing workout gym weights is mostly about matching the tool to the movement. Each of these does something the others can’t do as well.

Dumbbells

Best for unilateral work, pressing variations and anything where you want a natural path of motion. Great for full-body circuits at home because one pair covers a dozen exercises.

Barbells

The tool for maximum load. A 2-inch Olympic bar plus plates handles squats, deadlifts and bench work, and small plate jumps make long-term progression easy to track.

Weight Plates

More than bar loading — plates work as standalone tools for front raises, loaded carries, weighted sit-ups and step-ups when you want a simple, awkward-to-hold load.

Kettlebells

The offset handle makes ballistic movements possible. Swings, snatches and Turkish get-ups build power and conditioning in a way fixed-machine work doesn’t.

Adjustable Weights

One unit, many loads. Ideal if you train at home, rotate between exercises quickly, or don’t have floor space for a full dumbbell rack.

Benches & Racks

Not weights themselves, but they unlock the rest. An adjustable bench adds incline and decline angles; a rack makes heavy squatting and pressing safe to do alone.

Beyond the weights

Gym Equipment for Home and Commercial Setups

Weights do the work, but the equipment around them decides what you can train and how safely you can train it.

We stock weight benches in flat, incline and fully adjustable formats, power racks and squat stands for heavy pressing and squatting, barbells in standard and Olympic fitments, and plates to load them. Add plate trees and dumbbell racks to keep a garage gym organised, and rubber mats to protect the floor underneath.

For commercial gym equipment, the difference is duty cycle rather than function: heavier gauge steel, higher weight ratings and finishes that survive constant use. If you’re outfitting a studio or facility, the same categories apply — just built for far more sessions per week.

Exercise Bikes & Weight Loss: Where Cardio Fits In

A gym bicycle is a low-impact way to add steady activity to your week. It’s easy on the knees and ankles compared with running, it can be done on recovery days without much interference with strength training, and it’s simple to keep consistent because you can ride while watching or reading something.

Body composition is driven by overall energy balance, sleep, activity and diet over time — no single machine or exercise changes that on its own, and individual results vary. What a bike does do well is make regular movement easier to sustain. Many people pair a few rides a week with two or three sessions of gym weights, since resistance training helps maintain muscle while overall activity increases.

If you’re considering a change to your exercise or diet — especially with an existing health condition — talk it through with a doctor or qualified professional first.

FAQ

Gym Weights: Common Questions

What are gym weights?

Gym weights are the resistance tools used in strength training — dumbbells, barbells, weight plates, kettlebells and adjustable weights. They’re usually described as free weights because they aren’t fixed to a machine, so your body has to stabilise the load as well as move it.

What gym weights should beginners use?

Start lighter than you think. A pair of dumbbells you can control for 10–12 clean reps is a good benchmark, often in the 10–25 lb range depending on the exercise and the person. For barbell work, learn the movement with an empty or lightly loaded bar before adding plates. Technique first, load second.

What is the difference between 1-inch and 2-inch weight plates?

The difference is the centre hole. 1-inch standard weight plates have roughly a 25 mm bore and fit standard bars and 1-inch dumbbell handles. 2-inch Olympic weight plates have roughly a 50 mm bore and fit Olympic bars. They don’t interchange, so check your bar’s sleeve diameter before ordering.

Are Olympic weight plates 2 inches?

Yes. Olympic plates are made with a 2-inch (about 50 mm) centre bore so they slide onto the 2-inch sleeves of an Olympic barbell. That’s the standard used in commercial gyms and competition lifting.

Where can I buy free weights for sale?

You can browse our full range of free weights for sale online — dumbbells, barbells, plates and kettlebells, in both standard and Olympic fitments, sold individually and as sets.

What weights are best for a home gym?

For most home setups: a pair of adjustable dumbbells, an Olympic barbell, a plate set covering 5 through 45 lb, and an adjustable bench. That combination covers pressing, pulling, squatting and accessory work in a small footprint. Add a rack and matting if you’ll be lifting heavy.

What gym equipment do I need for strength training?

At minimum, a loadable bar with plates and something to press on. A power rack or squat stand makes heavy work safer when training alone, and collars keep plates secure. Dumbbells and kettlebells fill in accessory and conditioning work.

How do I choose the right weight for my workout?

Pick a load where the last two or three reps of your target range are genuinely hard but your form doesn’t break down. If you can comfortably exceed the range, go heavier next session. If form slips early, drop the weight. Progress in small, consistent steps rather than large jumps.
